Sunday, May 26 singer-songwriter, Claudia Schmidt returns to Arts Center East for a concert with Jane Miller. Claudia was doing a folk concert upstairs and Jane was playing instrumental jazz guitar in the lounge downstairs. They literally passed in the hallway, started talking, and Claudia (who loves singing jazz as well as folk!) ran downstairs to sit in for a song before her show. Thus was chemistry activated. This will be the first concert of what they hope to be many, incorporating standards, blues, some Claudia originals as well as a little spoken word here and there. Come and hear this delightful collaboration!

This is an online class for serious students who want to develop skill with the medium of soft pastel. Instruction includes a weekly tutorial, individual feedback and critique, and a weekly Zoom session on Tuesdays from 1:00–2:30pm EST/EDT, where the class can discuss topics and share with each other. All levels are welcome, and you can participate from anywhere. 

This class will help you develop confidence with the pastel medium, including building a strong composition, understanding values, creating light and shadow, developing color harmony, and bringing your subject to life through deliberate and expressive mark making. Various underpainting techniques will be introduced. All levels of experience are welcome.

Whether you’re an aspiring artist or new to the medium of drawing, you will learn how to pick out the right paper, types of pencils and to effectively render your chosen subject matter. Whether realistic or expressive, good drawing technique is basic and the foundation for most forms of artistic practice.

This drawing class will focus on draftspersonship using the simplest of mediums, the pencil. With graphite pencils and or colored pencils you can render any subject you can imagine. Individualized instruction will cover the basic mechanics of pencil drawing and you will be encouraged to develop your own distinctive strokes, and marks.

Take a step-by-step approach to learn basic watercolor techniques, including: color mixing, layering, values, brushstrokes, washes, wet-on-wet techniques, and painting flowers, birds, and bees.
Watercolor is a unique and fun medium that requires some knowledge of how it reacts to water and other substances. Many times it paints itself!
You will learn some basic techniques that you can use to develop your skills and create your own watercolor cards or gift tags.
