Vernon police are on the scene of a barricaded subject at the Vernon Pines apartment complex on Regan Street.

The subject - a male - is believed to be alone, according to police. The surrounding apartments have been evacuated, police said.

The staging area is at the Vernon Historical Society parking lot on Hartford Turnpike near West Street; the road is blocked off and a SWAT team is en route.

Police from East Hartford, South Windsor and Manchester, as well as the state police and regional SWAT team have also responded.

This is a developing story at an active police scene. Check back with Vernon Patch as details become available.

11:42 a.m.

A regional SWAT team was moved from the Historical Society to the scene.

Police have surrounded the complex.

Students at the MapleStreet School summer program were taken off the playground.

12:32 p.m.

A peaceful resolution to the crisis was reached when police negotiators talked the man out of his apartment and he was taken to Rockville General Hospital for observation, a police spokesman said.

Police are not releasing his name because the investigation is still ongoing. No charges have been filed.

Police spokesman Lt. William Meier said the man was agitated and called a crisis intervention line in the morning. A crisis operator then notified police and police then tried to make contact with the man, Meier said.

The man claimed to have a gun, and when he did not answer, a team of police officers went to the scene with crisis negotiators and the regional SWAT team was called in.

Negotiators spoke with the man and he eventually was taken to the hospital, Meier said.
