Vernon's 2013-14 Budget Proposal Defeated on Tuesday

The budget goes back to the Town Council.

Residents and taxpayers rejected the $82.6 budget proposal for the 2013-14 fiscal year in a town-wide referendum on Tuesday.

The count was 839 voting no and 649 voting yes.

It was a low turnout considering there are 16,264 registered voters in town.
Those who own more than $1,000 in assessed property were also eligible to vote.

The proposal carried a 1.8-mill tax increase over the current tax rate of 33.63 mills.

The proposed bottom line was $82,601,659, an increase of $2,002,499 over the current year's budget of $80,599,160.

General government was proposed at $26,522,202. That's $349,835 more than this year.

At $5,909,679, capital improvement and debt service was down by $336,126.
Education was proposed at $50,169,787. That is $1,988,790 more than this year's budget.

Mayor George Apel took out $1.5 million from the original education request.

The budget goes back to the Town Council, which is scheduled to meet Monday  at 7:30 p.m. to review the numbers. By rule, the meeting will have a public comment session.
