Donations Helping To Restock Food Pantry Shelves

CEO wants to keep "the momentum going" into the Thanksgiving Season.

Hockanum Valley Community Council CEO David Engelson said on Wednesday that the partnership the food pantry has forged with Patch is helping to restock the shelves.

This week, it is looking more like a market again rather than an empty warehouse. Since Engelson made an emotional plea for donations three weeks ago in a Patch posting, saying the pantry was desperate, hundreds of food items have rolled in.

In addition to non-perishable food items, cash and gift card donations can be made.

The pantry is located at 29 Naek Road in Vernon.

The Weissberger State Farm insurance agency, located at 10 Hyde Ave., on Route 30 near the Vernon-Tolland line, is serving as a drop-off point through Friday.

The pantry was handing out 3,500 to 4,000 food items a week last July and is now at the 6,000 mark.

Engelson said he wants to "keep the momentum going" with donations through the summer and into the Thanksgiving season.
