Vernon Free Summer Lunch Program Kicks Off on Monday

The program runs into August.

Mayor George Apel has announced that the Vernon Youth Services Bureau will be offering Free summer lunches at four local sites beginning on Monday.

Free lunch is provided to any resident 18 and younger.

Lunches include a sandwich, fruit, juice and milk and will be served between 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at several locations, the mayor said.

Vernon Youth Services Director, Alan Slobodien, said that last year, more than 6,000 lunches were provided to Vernon youth while;e adding he expects that number to be topped this year.

Children younger than 10 must be accompanied by an adult in the program, Slobodien said.

"The beauty of this program is it’s very simple - just show up, no identification is needed," he said. "Two rules do apply, we have to follow start and end times and lunches must be eaten on site."

Residents can call 860-870-3555 with any questions, he said.
