What's On Tonight: House, America's Got Talent, Bethenny Ever After

TV tips for Monday, May 21, 2012

House, 8 p.m., Fox When it began, oh those many years ago, it was groundbreaking and different and interesting and fun. And then … the formula set in. I have not watched in years, but I did love those first three seasons. Thanks Hugh Laurie. America’s Got Talent, 8 p.m., NBC The best part remains Nick Cannon. Bethenny Ever After, 10 p.m., Bravo In all seriousness – eat something.

What's On Tonight: Celebrity Apprentice, The 2012 Billboard Music Awards, Nurse Jackie

TV tips for Sunday, May 20, 2012

Celebrity Apprentice, 9 p.m., NBC And the winner is … In a million years I would not have pegged Arsenio and Clay Aiken to be the finalists. Right? Or certainly that snot Aubrey to have come in third. Which is why we love the Apprentice! I am picking Clay to win. For no particular reason, other than I still feel bad I voted for Ruben in the Idol finale. The 2012 Billboard Music Awards, 8 p.m., ABC “Festivities at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas recognize artists for the fan support they've garnered; musical performances include Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber, LMFAO and the Wanted; musician Stevie Wonder receives the 2012 Billboard Icon Award.” Nurse Jackie, 9 p.m., Showtime The best evolution in this new season is not the trials and …

It's a Race to the Finish

Some ideas to motivate your child to finish the school year strong, even though beautiful weather and other distractions are great temptations.

I will let you in on a little secret: checking PowerSchool five times a day does not make the numbers go up any more than getting on the scale every hour will make the numbers go down. To lose weight you just have to motivate yourself. To improve grades you have to motivate your kids, which is infinitely more difficult. I will trade places with Bob Harper any day of the week.  I spent this past week trying to light fires under my students, who seem to think the school year will wait until they finish all their assignments and research papers, while simultaneously talking parents off the ledge. This happens every year at about this time. It’s the pre-finals slump; right after research papers are due and before hardcore studying for finals …

What's On Tonight: Harry's Law, The Firm, Meet Mrs. Eastwood & Company

TV tips for Saturday, May 19, 2012

Harry’s Law, 8 p.m., NBC Cancelled. The Firm, 9 p.m., NBC Cancelled. Meet Mrs. Eastwood & Company, 10 p.m., E! I imagine being married to Clint Eastwood is a lot like being forced to watch Unforgiven over and over in a small, airless room. So perhaps having her own reality show is just something to do to pass the time, but perhaps it is a cry for help (like Gary Busey’s wife on Wife Swap). So I plan to watch closely, for clues. “Clint Eastwood's wife, Dina, introduces their daughters and their housekeeper, then Dina reveals her passion project.”

Why Running Up the Score Is a Classless Thing To Do

A lacrosse tournament offers up a lesson in restraint.

OK, I agree that stiffer competition can make a team better in the long run. I get that. It’s why the younger brothers and sisters of siblings involved in sports often show advanced skills early on. So there we were on a Saturday afternoon at a lacrosse tournament with teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. I got the feeling that the team from Long Island wasn’t making the trip to lose to a team made up of mostly football players and former baseball players (as one mom perfectly stated). I’ll make a crazy assumption that the team from LI spends the entire calendar year playing together as a unit. They could have been blindfolded and still have known where their teammates were. It was fun to watch — at first.   With each game …

What's On Tonight: American Graffiti, Celebrity Apprentice, Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids

TV tips for Friday, May 18, 2012

American Graffiti, 8 p.m., TCM Oh, I love this movie. I have not seen it in years. Might be the perfect Friday night antidote to another crazy week. Maybe I’ll swing by the store and pick up a pocket comb, a pack of gum, and a bottle of whiskey and just settle in. The Celebrity Apprentice, 8 p.m., CNBC In case you missed the look on Aubrey’s face last Sunday when she got fired – or the even better look on her face when Arsenio picked Teresa over her after that – you can watch it all again tonight. Or even if you have already seen it and you simply enjoyed it as much as we did – watch it again! Say Yes To The Dress: Bridesmaids, 9:30 p.m., TLC “A church pastor mother who doesn't want the sexy short dress; a mother that doesn't want her …

What's On Tonight: Person of Interest, 30 Rock, Missing

TV tips for Thursday, May 17, 2012

Person of Interest, 9 p.m., CBS What a great season this turned out to be. I love when a new show starts out intriguing and then gets better. Such a rarity. Tonight, in the season finale (it has been renewed), all hell breaks loose as the government closes in on Reese. Finch, Fusco and Carter must save him! Do you think they will? And do you think they will finally explain why HR is called HR? 30 Rock, 8:30 p.m., NBC In the season finale (renewed!!!) jack asks Liz to officiate at his and Avery’s vow renewal. Remember what happened the last time Liz was at Jack and Avery’s wedding? She ended up married to Jack. So this could be fun. Missing, 8 p.m., ABC Hope you didn’t love this, because it ain’t coming back.

How the Robin Finds Worms and More About Connecticut's State Bird

The American robin's common name results from a case of mistaken identity, and it's really not an accurate sign of spring. Facts and fallacies about this perky bird.

The American robin is one of those birds that is so common it lends credence to the old saw about familiarity breeding contempt. Perhaps contempt is too strong a word, but the robin is often taken for granted because of its familiarity. If it were rare, the beautiful orange that it sports from chin to underparts would make it a birder's prize. A considerable body of lore — not all  factual — surrounds the American robin, state bird of Connecticut as well as of Michigan and Wisconsin. Our bird got its name from the orange-chested Old World, or "European,"  robin because early European colonists in America  were wont to name New World animals after look-alike species in the old country. Thus Eurasia's elk is our moose. In Eurasia, our …

What's On Tonight: Modern Family, Don't Trust the B..., Criminal Minds

TV tips for Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Modern Family, 9 p.m., ABC Last week’s episode was the perfect mix of emotion and humor. The humanity of Jay was really touching, in both his reminiscences of the dissolution of his marriage, and his care of Gloria’s feet. Don’t Trust The B …, 9:30 p.m., ABC “Meatballs!” Seriously, if you are not watching this – why not? And thank goodness, it has been renewed! Criminal Minds, 9 p.m., CBS Season finale — and for all you fans of rampant misogyny, this has been renewed.
