HVCC Gets 5,000 pounds of Food in Collection

Another food drive is slated for June

Last Saturday's food drive sponsored by the letter carriers from the local post office garnered 5,500 pounds for the Hockanum Valley Community Council's pantry, HVCC officials said.

The total represents 1,000 pounds more than last year.

"For this, we are very appreciative," HVCC's Heidi Bearse said.

Bearse said she is not sure how long it will last because more than 800 families are using the pantry each month.

The pantry on Naek Road is giving out approximately 3,500 food items each week so what was collected might last two weeks, HVCC officials said.

The next food drive is scheduled for the Stop and Shops in Vernon and South Windsor on June 9 and 10.
