The U.S. representative spoke at the weekly meeting.

The Rotary Club of Rockville, which consists of members from Vernon, Ellington and Tolland, hosted U.S. Rep. Joseph Courtney this week in a meeting at the R House Restaurant in Vernon.

The visit by Courtney, a 2nd District Democrat and Vernon resident, drew 30 current and former Rotarians as well as other guests.

Courtney delivered a few remarks and offered a question-and-answer session on current state, national and international issues of interest to the
residents of eastern Connecticut.

Topics included military Base Closings and Realignment Commission and the state’s efforts to prevent any possible attempt to close the submarine base in Groton.

He also discussed the new makeup of the 2nd Congressional District, the volatile situation in Iran and the Vow to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 which is
designed to lower the rate of unemployment among U.S. veterans.
