Community Update

One of the top complaints of this time of the year - besides for freezing every time you step outside - is the horrible static and frizzies that come with the dryness of winter. The newest member to the Velvet Touch's team, Holly, has compiled a Top 5 list to help you win the battle!

1. Use product before styling.
With the dry winter air, it's important to be using products such as a heat protectant while styling. It helps protect and hold in moisture to prep the hair for those high heat styling tools. Stylist and Client Favorite? Colour Fanatic by Pureology. It boasts 21 essential benefits for your hair, including heat protection and moisturizer for dry hair. It's a winter month must have!

2.  Try a conditioning treatment.
The salon offers dozens of different types of treatments for dry hair. From conditioning masks to Redken Shot Phix products, the possibilities are endless (and affordable!) For at home care, try  Redken's All Soft Heavy Cream.

3.  Serums and oils.
Wether you have fine or coarse hair, there's a serum for you. Serums such as Redken Diamond oil or Moroccan Oil are an easy fix to dryness and static. Try applying it to damp hair before styling or carry a sample size in your bag to put in dry hair on the go. We'll have a follow up post on how to select the right oil for your needs :)

4.  Use a professional shampoo and conditioner.
It's important to use nothing but the best products in your hair. After all, it's your best accessory! Although products on grocery store shelves claim to do everything you want it to, its not a guarantee. Talk to your stylist and ask what she recommends for hair that needs a boost of moisture during these dry months, any of the stylists at the VT would be more than happy to help you make the right selection.

5. Try a different hair spray.
Many hairsprays contain a lot of alcohol. It's not damaging to the hair, but it does cause some moisture evaporation. Try Redken wax blast as an alternative during the winter. It's an aerosol spray wax that acts very similar to typical hair sprays, minus the extra alcohol content. It holds styles in place and has the added bonus of a great scent!
