Vernon's New Chef Making the Air a Little More Crisp at National Night Out

He wants to show off a new recipe.

In the past, the Vernon public school system's food services staff has had a tasty presence at National Night Out.

The table traditionally promotes healthy snacks and shares information with the community about the program.

Chef Chris Avtges, the new director of food and nutrition services, is adding a new twist this year.

Avtges said the recipe was developed by fellow Chef Philip Dell, who won the recent Food Network Chopped episode Avtges appeared in.

"His recipe won recognition and endorsement by the American Heart Association and I feel it fits right into our plans to offer healthier items to our students," Avtges said. "I think this will be a great way for us to show the community what we are capable of doing. I also believe this is a recipe that can appear on our school menus, so it would be fantastic to let folks give us feedback on the spot about it."

Avtges said he would like to feature locally grown zucchini.

The 2013 edition of National Night Out is scheduled for Aug. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Downtown Rockville.
