Vernon Awarded School Readiness Grant

The grant is for Northeast School and the Hockanum Valley Child Day Care Center.

Mayor George F. Apel announced this week that the Vernon Youth Services Bureau was awarded a state School Readiness grant in the amount of $174,500.

The funds will support 13 full-day and 15 part-day pre-school spaces for 3- and 4-year-olds at the Hockanum Valley Child Day Care Center and the Vernon public schools pre-school program at Northeast School, them mayor said.

The programs will receive $107,000 and $67,500 respectively, Apel said.

"Birth to age six is a significant developmental time for children," Apel said. "I am pleased that these funds will provide space and enhanced educational opportunities for 28 of Vernon’s earliest learners."

Apel continued, "These two preschool programs also meet the rigorous accreditation standards of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and I am appreciative of the efforts of Youth Services Director, Alan Slobodien in securing these funds."

Vernon hosts a total of eight NAEYC accredited programs.
