Last week, Rockville High School’s SSNAP group baked and delivered cookies to six Vernon stores licensed to sell alcohol who passed a recent compliance check.
The compliance check was a joint operation recently conducted by the state Liquor Control Division and the Vernon Police Department, with the goal of making sure that no licensed stores in Vernon would sell to a minor.
Members of SSNAP, which stands for “Students Seeking New Achievements Positively,” decided that it was important for them to acknowledge the stores that complied with the law.
“We just felt that the places that failed the compliance check got more recognition than the ones that passed and we didn’t think that was right,” said group member, Alyssa Condon.
Condon’s fellow member, Chelsea Poloski, agreed.
“We wanted to shed light on the stores that are obeying the laws and thank them for it,” She said.
The group wanted to thank the stores personally, so members decided to bake and deliver cookies.
The dough was prepared by the Rockville High School food classes, and baked by several SSNAP members. There were many different types, including chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, chocolate crinkle, and snicker doodle. And there were plenty to go around.
“We were able to make several dozen cookies,” said group member Tim Lyons.
After spreading the treats between six decorative containers, it was time to deliver.
Condon and Poloski, along with program advisor Kim McTighe and school resource officer Steven Langlais, drove to the six stores to thank them.
McTighe was supportive of the idea from the beginning,
“The mission of SSNAP is to promote good decision making," she said. "We work hard to encourage students to make good choices and wanted to take the opportunity to commend local establishments who were found in compliance with local liquor laws and are working to keep Vernon youth safe."
The stores that were compliant and did not sell alcohol to minors were: Stop and Shop (Vernon), Stop and Shop (Rockville), Price Chopper, Adam's Polish Foods, Wine Seller, and Four Seasons Package Store.
