CREC's Magnets Already Pulling Extra Coins Out of Vernon

CREC school enrollment is projected at 186.

Superintendent of Schools Mary Conway on Monday told the Board of Education that magnet school tuition is dragging down the 2013-14 budget by more than $110,000 even before the fiscal year begins.

And that is just counting the schools in the Capitol Region Education Council system.

Conway said that, in terms of costs to Vernon, the final figure for the current fiscal year - which concludes at the end of the month - is $594,638 for the CREC schools. That is for 146 students, she said.

There were 10 seniors that graduated, which deduct $41,720 from the costs, she said.

However, there are 43 acceptances for the next school year and seven more pending, bringing the total to 186, Conway said. That adds up to $760,758, she said.

The school board has budgeted $650,000 for the coming fiscal year and that creates a hole of $110,758, she said.
