Thanksgiving Football 2013: 5 Reasons to Root for Rockville

The rivalry continues.

Rockville High School football coach Steve Schortman likens the Thanksgiving Day game with South Windsor to a John Wayne movie.

"The game will be decided by turnovers and true grit," he said. "I look forward to this rivalry every year and this year is no exception."

Kickoff on Thursday is scheduled for 10 a.m. A win would be the first for either team, so it is all about bragging rights at this point.

Schortman said he would not mind the SWHS field staying wet after a lot of rain Tuesday night and Wednesday.

"It's going to be a battle. I'm looking forward to the weather to help even the playing field for both teams," he said. "We have been in preparation for this game from the beginning of the season. This is our last chance to get a win all we have to do is compete. Both teams have struggled this season and need a win desperately for bragging rights."

With all that, here are five reasons to root for Rockville.

Patch editor Ted Glanzer is offering a rebuttal from the SW side.

•

1. The pre-game meal. RHS has the Ram Burger, the creation of culinary students and Chef Chris Avtges, he of Food Network Chopped fame and the food and nutritional services director for the Vernon school system.

2. Better transportation. Ram trucks are tough and get commercials from cowboy movie stars with cool voices. Bobcats, are, well, Pintos in disguise.

3. The Band. Yes, one of the best in the state, but the RHS band needs a good reason to play upbeat tunes.

4. Vernon's Emergency Management department has a flying surveillance drone and, conceivably could have watched practices in South Windsor.

5. Just because, OK?

Go Rams!
