Vernon Students Earn Degrees and Honors

The latest campus notes.

At the University of Rhode Island's 126th Commencement, and two Vernon residents were among the students who received their undergraduate or graduate degrees:

• Chelsea Jubrey received a BA degree in English.

• Sara M. Lotas received a BSN degree in nursing.

Merrimack College held its 62nd Commencement Exercises on May 20.

Kyle Grant of Vernon Rockville, CT graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

Mary Ferruolo, a member of the class of 2015 at Connecticut College and a resident of Vernon, has been named to the Dean's Honors list for the 2012 spring semester.

At Connecticut College, Dean's Honors is a recognition for students who have earned a grade point average of at least 3.66, and Dean's High Honors is a recognition for students who have earned a grade point average of at least 3.78.

Brent Faherty of Vernon has been named to the Spring 2012 Dean's List at American International College in Springfield. Faherty was one of more than 450 AIC students recognized for their academic achievements.

Faherty is a Senior majoring in nursing.

Dean's List students are full-time students, with a grade point average between 3.3 and 4.0 for the semester.

The School of Education and Professional Studies and the Graduate Division at Eastern Connecticut State University held its 12th-Annual Excellence Expo May 2. The expo took place in several locations across campus, including the Student Center, Charles R. Webb Hall and the J. Eugene Smith Library.

Jamie Vallarelli, Class of 2013 of Vernon, was one of the participants. Vallarelli's major is early childhood education.

Leah Landry, Class of 2013 of Vernon, was one of the participants. Landry's major is physical education.

Lauren Breslin, Class of 2012 of Vernon, was one of the participants. Breslin's major is communication.

Samantha Harris of Vernon earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Quinnipiac University during the 81st undergraduate commencement exercises on May 20.

Emma K. Petersen of Vernon received a bachelor of science degree in environmental studies within the Rubenstein School of Environment & Natural Resources during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont.

The following students from Vernon were named to the Dean's List at the University of New Haven for the spring 2012 semester. Full-time undergraduate students must have a 3.50 or better cumulative GPA for the semester to be eligible for the Dean's List:

• Christopher Henderson.

• Ashley Shepard.

Casey Ann Donahue of Vernon was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in administration of justice and political science during Salve Regina University's 62nd commencement on Sunday, May 20.

Bryant University held its 149th Commencement on May 19. Among the graduates was Kelly Cocco of Vernon, who earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration in accounting.

Cocco received the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key presented to the graduating senior with the highest cumulative academic average toward a degree in business or economics. Cocco also received the Rhode Island Society for Certified Public Accountants Award presented to the graduating senior who, in the opinion of the accounting faculty, has demonstrated excellence in accounting studies and intends to pursue a career in public accounting.

Eastern Connecticut State University's 122nd Commencement took place at the XL Center in Hartford on May 15. In all, 1,230 undergraduates and 88 graduate students earned their degrees, including:

• Sean Dzurenda of Vernon graduated with a degree in sociology.

• Jonathan Fontaine of Vernon graduated with a degree in physical education.

• Dyana Ryba of Vernon graduated cum laude with a degree in visual arts.

• Jerry Steben of Vernon graduated with a degree in mathematics.

• Jessica DiManno of Vernon graduated cum laude with a degree in psychology.

• Mary Elizabeth Marchesani of Vernon graduated magna cum laude with a degree in psychology.

• Bonnie O'Donnell of Vernon graduated with a degree in accounting.

• Courtney Ojard of Vernon graduated cum laude with a degree in communication.

• Hannah Ojard of Vernon graduated magna cum laude with a degree in social work.

• Bethany Vorchheimer of Vernon graduated with a degree in music.

• Christine Williams of Vernon graduated with a degree in sociology.

Kevin Dumont of Vernon graduated with a degree in communication.

• Sunhee Park of Vernon graduated with a degree in business administration.

• Nicole Thomas of Vernon graduated with a degree in psychology.

Peter Bard of Vernon graduated with a master's degree in secondary education.

Galilee Simmons of Vernon graduated with a master's degree in elementary education.

Twelve Eastern Connecticut State University students were inducted into the Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society on May 12, including Hannah Ojard, class of 2012 of Vernon.

Linnea Tullson of Vernon graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in imaging science from RIT's College of Science in the winter 2011–2012 quarter.

The School of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Connecticut State University recently held the 11th Annual Student Research Conference and Exhibition. The event featured research projects in the form of oral, poster, performance, and art presentations.

Vernon was well-represented:

Meghan Clough, Class of 2013, of Vernon participated in the event. Clough's poster presentation was titled "Exploring the Relationships Between Gender, Self Esteem, and Sexual Permissiveness." Clough is majoring in psychology.

Jessica DiManno, Class of 2012, of Vernon participated in the event. DiManno's oral presentation was titled "Implicit and Explicit Anti-Fat Bias in Physical Educators and Physical Education Majors." DiManno is majoring in psychology.

Jamie Vallarelli, Class of 2013 of Vernon participated in the event. Vallarelli's oral presentation was titled "Associations Between Depression, Stress, and Exercise." Vallarelli is majoring in early childhood education and psychology.

Bethany Vorchheimer, class of 2012 of Vernon participated in the event. Vorchheimer's performance presentation was titled "Performance of In C." Vorchheimer is majoring in Music.

Fifteen students majoring in business information systems and computer science at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the international honor society for computing and information disciplines. The society recognizes academic excellence in the computing and information disciplines.

Alexander Rouleau, Clas of 2013 of Vernon, CT, was one of the inductees.
