[Updated] Vernon on the High End of Snow Totals

No Friday trash and recycling will be collected and the April school vacation has been further affected by another snow day.

Updated Friday, 8:06 a.m.

There is no school in Vernon today as snow fell through the night Thursday and into Friday morning.

Here is the official alert message from the school system:

Good morning, this is Mary Conway, superintendent of schools in Vernon. Schools will be closed today, Friday, March 8, 2013 due to the snow. I repeat, schools will be closed today, Friday, March 8. Thank you and have a good day.

The snow day means students in Vernon Center Middle School and Rockville High School will have classes for two days at the end of the April vacation - April 18 and 19.

April 19 will now be a day of classes for elementary school students in Vernon.

State Homeland Security officials and the National Weather Service had warned that a slight temperature change would leave Vernon closer to the 10-inch end of the storm than the original 6 inches predicted.

Local emergency management officials said no major incidents related to the snow have been reported.

Connecticut Light & Power was reporting, via the Vernon Office of Emergency Management, that 92 customers were without power early Friday morning. The outages were related to a "fuse issue" on Hartford Turnpike and they were in the Hillside Avenue feed to Hilltop and Hillside Manor avenues. The expected repair time was by 8 this morning, but as of 6:52 a.m., just two customers were without power, emergency management officials said.
