Vernon Board of Education Endorses Special Education Grant

Vernon Board of Education is taking a proactive measure to bolster special education programs and dropout prevention.

Gerald Griffin, the school system's  supervisor of assessments, grants and career education, has made a request to the Vernon Board of Education to apply for a Special Education Resource Center Dropout Planning Grant.

The grant totals $5,000.

The grant funds will be used to support the recommendation of the dropout prevention study committee to develop a summer program for special education students who are at risk of dropping out of school. No cost will be incurred by the Vernon Board of Education.

Schol system officials said special education students often have limited access to needed vocational courses because of their specialized programing. The summer course will provide instruction in the vocational area.

Griffin explianed to the school board on Monday that the grant money will be used for teachers and transportation. Some limited amounts of additional grant money will be needed to cover the expenses of the program. These monies will be obtained from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 special education funds. The Board of Education funds will not be used for this program.
