Superintendent Sends Message to School Community

Monday is the first day back since the Newtown tragedy.

In a message to the school community via the telephone and through e-mail on Sunday, Superintendent of Schools Mary Conway delivered the following message in anticipation of the first day back at school since the shootings in Newtown:

Good Morning, this is Mary Conway, Superintendent of the Vernon Public Schools. Today is Sunday, December 16, 2012. As you and your children prepare to return to school tomorrow morning, we are still trying to make sense in our lives of the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Friday.

Here in Vernon, administrators and central office personnel will be meeting early Monday with members of our Vernon Police Department to complete a thorough review of our current safety and security policies and procedures.

Each school's crisis team is meeting to determine how best to support our students and their families through this difficult time. And I have placed on our Web site - vernonpublicschools.org - a link to a document developed by the National Association of School Psychologists for parents looking for help in dealing with their children titled "Talking to Children about Violence."

Please remember that your children's health and safety are our highest priority.  Thank you for your time this morning. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your children.
