School Board Gives High School the OK for Grant Application

Rockville High can now further its relationship with Manchester Community College.

The Vernon Board of Education on Monday gave Rockville High School officials the go-ahead to to apply for funds through Manchester Community College's College to Career Pathway Grant program.

The grant would offer college level credits to RHS students.

The grant application is for $5,950. The grant supports activities for the high school's articulated course agreement with MCC. Juniors and seniors who are enrolled in high school articulated courses receive MCC credits for their work. Funding provided is for field trips, professional development and supplies.

This grant is part of the English Bridge Program, which prepares high school students to for the Language Arts Accyplacer Test. Funding is provided for tutoring, professional development, and transportation for these actives.  Students can score at three levels - college, basic, and below basic. Scoring at "college level" will allow students to take college-level English and receive credit. If a student scores at the "basic level" he or she can still take college-level English, but they do not receive credit.  "Below Basic" is taking a high school-level English.

Students receive credits for articulated courses that are valued at approximately $35,000.  A MCC language arts professor team teaches a class at RHS and provides professional development for the teachers for a cost to MCC of $5,863. The college administers at its expense language arts pre- and post- Accuplacer Diagnostic test to 80 students at a cost of $1,600.

The grant application presentation was given by Jerry Griffin, supervisor of grants for career education.  Board member Paul Stansel made a motion to endorse the application and the board voted unanimously in favor of it.
