Safe Events are a SSNAP at Rockville High School

The SSNAP program has been promoting alcohol awareness this week.

Alyssa Holmes didn't want to brag about the SSNAP program, but …

There was the RHS senior in front of the Town Council on Tuesday doing just that, flanked by fellow students and SSNAP members Chelsea McDonnell and Nadine Ferreri and mentor Kim McTigue.

They were at Town Hall to support Alcohol Prevention Awareness Week and offer a perspective on how SSNAP, which stands for Students Seeking New Achievements Positively, had just a little to do with another safe prom season.

The SSNAP crew can make things interesting. Before one prom, SSNAP-ers parked themselves at the cafeteria and asked students to song a pledge saying they would stay safe for the prom. The end result was a stack of pledges a good 4-inches thick.

For emphasis, Holmes held the stack of papers aloft for all the council to see.

Another trick is to have School Resource Officer Earl Middleton bring in the "drunk glasses," which are designed to distort what you see to simulate intoxication.

"I put them on and I was, like, al over the place," Holmes said. "I had no idea what I was doing."

The goal of SSNAP, Holes said, is awareness.
