Rockville High School creative writing students Rachael Nutt and Hannah Gerhard have been named 2013 Scholastic National Medal recipients.
Nutt received a gold medal for her flash fiction piece, "Julia," and Gerhard received gold and silver medals for her poetry collections.
The two will be honored along with their teacher, Vicky Nordlund, during an awards ceremony scheduled for May 31 at Carnegie Hall.
Medalists and their teachers will also have the opportunity to attend workshops in New York City, where they will meet with artists and writers to learn about creative professions.
This year, 230,000 works of art and writing were submitted to Scholastic regional programs across the nation.
