Rockville High's Oliva Signs to Play at Assumption

She said she is looking forward to taking the mound for the Worcester school.

Courtney Oliva always seems to have a smile on her face lately, whether is is on the softball field reflecting on a state championship or in the classroom at Rockville High School or after school working with the town's recreation program.

And on Monday, that smile was just a little bit bigger as the RHS senior signed a letter of intent to play softball at Assumption College.

"It feels really good knowing where I will be playing softball and going to school," she said.

Then the smile came out again.

"All my friends are worried about it."

Joking aside, Oliva said a couple of visits and a few meetings with the Assumption coaching staff made a four-year commitment to the Worcester school seem like the perfect fit. RHS Athletic Director Steven Phelps said it is also a good academic match for Oliva to specialize in working with children.

"The campus is beautiful and I had a great (official) visit," she said. "Everyone was so welcoming."

And that seems likely to translate to the field because Oliva said she should be able to step in and pitch some significant innings for the Greyhounds.

When asked if signing in the winter would make life a little more relaxed, Oliva said yes. But she also said Rockville has set a goal of repeating.
