RHS Green Team Calling for Votes in CL&P's "Live Green - Win Green" Contest

The students are competing for $35,000 in grant money.

Rockville High School has a team of technical education students competing against other schools throughout the Connecticut Light & Power service area in the "Live Green - Win Green" contest.

And it is calling on residents to vote enough times for its entry to win.

The students are vying for $35,000 in grant money that they can apply to the green project they envision for their school. The grand prize winner will receive a $20,000 grant and three runners-up will each be awarded $5,000 grants.

The contest consists of a two-minute video (RHS produced two) and an essay outlining how the school is going green, and how the prize money can help the team reach that goal.

He is a sample of the RHS entry:

"We feel green living is about more than just recycling and conservation efforts. Encouraging those practices will always be crucial; however, we don’t want to lose sight of the bigger picture. Our plan is more ambitious. We want to address the main issues regarding energy use and environmental problems related to the production of greenhouse gases. There is mounting evidence that our world’s growing carbon footprint has become a major contributing factor with regard to global climate change. Therefore, we feel the top priority should be about the education and preparation of today’s students for tomorrow’s workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The education and training of today’s workforce for STEM careers may very well be the key to solving tomorrow’s problems. The world needs to balance its growing energy wants and needs with protecting our environment."

The CL&P “Live Green - Win Green” voting has begun and it runs through March 22.

"Please give us your support," said Matthew Kibbe, the RHS Green Team adviser. "We are hoping to win the big $20,000 first-place prize this year. With your help we may do just that. You can vote online up to 5 times per IP address at home and at work. Feel free to spread the word to family, friends, students and everyone you know in or out of state. Every vote matters. Remember: Competing schools will be doing the same thing."
