Ram Football Team Gets Ready for New Season

The Rockville High School football team wraps up the preseason with a scrimmage against Ellington-Somers on Friday Night at Rockville High School.

The Rockville High School football team kicks off its season against Rocky Hill on Friday at home, but the Rams but first had a preseason scrimmage last Friday night against Ellington to warm up for the upcoming season.

Ellington jumped out to an early lead and grabbed 20 points in the second quarter to go into the half up 27-0.  Ellington would end up winning the scrimmage, 35-6.  Ellington quarterback Bryan Rider had three rushing touchdowns to lead the Knights in scoring.

The young Rockville team was still working out the kinks to tune up for its opening game.  Senior Captain Kevin Lukas played well on both sides of the ball for the Rams while Devin Charles picked up tough yardage from his running back position.

The Rams were forced to play their backup quarterback while projected starter, Neil Gentile, sat out after an injury in practice. Sophomore Dan Wheeler, stepped in at quarterback for the Rams and ran the offense.

Rockville head coach David Jedidian said about the upcoming season that while his team may be young, he expects his players to try to compete in each game.

“We are very young and have several sophomores starting for us,” Jedidian said. “We had to replace six or seven starters on both sides ball but even though we are inexperienced, this year we have more speed I think then we did last year.”

Rockville will have to mature quickly as its schedule is not an easy one.  The Rams have three teams on their schedule this year that saw postseason action last year including - tough games with Bloomfield and Berlin.

As for the scrimmage on Friday night, Jedidian said that it was a wakeup call for his team and that the Rams y need to improve before the start of the season.

“I think our offense did OK tonight,” said Jedidian. “We moved the ball but we couldn’t put the ball in the endzone.  Our defense still needs work though.  But overall things are looking up.”

Rockville will kick off the season with a home game against Rocky Hill on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
