Ram Band Steps into 2012 Season

RHS is taking on tunes from a popular musical.

The Rockville High School Marching Ram Band has never been afraid of taking on an ambitious project.

But even by its standards, this one is big.

Les Miserables.

Veteran Director Darcy Davis on Thursday was taking the "why not" approach. After, all Oct. 20 will mark the 20th anniversary of the RHS festival of bands and it's also the 150th anniversary of Victor Hugo's book.

So this week's band camp took on a little extra meaning. Band members drilled during two-a days in an effort to get ready for the first showcase - a Sept. 21 home football game against Platt. The seasonal preview performance is scheduled for Aug. 27.

The Oct. 20 festival will feature 15 bands from Connecticut and Massachusetts - including the bands from Central Connecticut State University and the University of Massachusetts. It involves about 1,000 musicians and color guard members.

Davis said the Ram Band will focus on three Les Mis songs - the "Work Song" that is part of the play's overture; "Castle on a Cloud," the musings of a young Cosette; and two uprising songs - "Attack on Rue Plumet" and the popular "One Day More."

2012 RHS drum majors are Ryan Fujimoto and Jackie Ose. RHS will compete in 5 competitions leading up to the New England regional competition on Nov. 3 in Bridgeport.
