The latest figures were out last week.

It's now a case of magnet school tuition gone wild for Vernon.

The latest information on magnet school enrollment, available through the Vernon Board of Education, shows that 146 local students have chosen to attend 25 different magnet schools.

That translates to $594,638 the local school board must pay out for tuition.

Vernon has budgeted $450,000 after adding $50,000 during this year's budgetary approval process.

Magnet school tuition on the list ranges from $3,075 to $5,100.

Conversely,Vernon is taking in $27,000 for three choice students at Lake Street School, one at Vernon Center Middle School and five at Rockville High School.

School officials said they have been constantly monitoring the magnet school figures and will discuss the latest costs in the near future.

About $600,000 is in next year's budget proposal.

$3,000.00 to $5,100.00 per year, per child in a classroom is quite a bargain compared to the approx $10,000.00 per sear cost of a child in the Vernon public schools. This is another example of why Vouchers and "Follow the child" pay-out systems are a far better way to work education in local communities.

That is just the sending towns share. The state also subsidizes the tuition. We all ultimately pay the bill.
