Lake Street Wins Food Donation Challenge

Students in town collect more than 1,500 food items for Tri-Town.

Local students collected more than 1,500 food items and donated them to the Tri-Town Food Pantry.

The effort was part of the challenge issued by Superintendent of Schools Mary Conway and the winner of the superintendent's trophy this year is lake Street School, which collected 529 items, double that of its closest competitor.

Conway presented the trophy to Principal Robert Testa during a Wednesday assembly.

Here is a breakdown of donations by school:

• Lake Street School, 529 items.

• Vernon Center Middle School, 255 items, a $25 gift card plus $60.

• Rockville High School,  250 items plus $164.

• Center Road School, 159 items.

• School system administration, 120 items.

• Northeast School, 111 items.

• Maple Street School, 61 items.

• Skinner Road School, 19 items.

Conway said the challenge will be a yearly thing.
