It's the Democrats' Turn to Donate to the Prom

A prominent town committee member says that more than $500 is being pledged.

OK, now the Rockville High School Class of 2014 prom deposits seem to be paid for in full.

Local Democrats are taking care of the balance and maybe more, Democratic Town Council member and mayoral candidate Thomas DiDio said.

DiDio said more than $500 was pledged. He said they seem to be all individual donations of less than $100, but he was unsure on Thursday how the money would be distributed.

The Vernon Republican Town Committee on Wednesday collected $1,561 in individual donations and party officials said the money will be presented to the Junior Class. The money is enough to pay for the $1,000 the students put down toward a prom reservation at La Renaissance in East Windsor. The venue, however is in a foreclosure sale sand its future is uncertain. The deposit is contractually non-refundable, RHS officials have said.

The money covered half of the $1,000 deposit the class gave The Riverview in Simsbury in the scramble to find a new place. The Dems' pledges should make the prom on the house.

RHS principal Eric Baim said he was contacted by the Class of 1978 about a donation.

The prom saga has developed into a mess for the students over the course of about a week. It started with a foreclosure sale announcement at La Renaissance, and continued with the quick decision to risk losing that deposit and booking The Riverview and then the rejection by Board of Education Democrats of a $1,000 pledge for prom costs from local businessman and Republican Town Council member Adam Weissberger.

The students have been overjoyed at the support show toward them.
