In Vernon, It's Back to School on Aug. 29 and 30

The staggered dates are designed to benefit transitional students

The start dates for public school students have been announced.

For another academic year, they are on staggered dates:

• The first day of school for students in Grades K through 6, and Grade 9 is Aug. 29.

• The first day of school for students in PK, Grades 7 and 8 and grades 10 through 12 is Aug. 30.

One reason for the staggered dates is to offer additional support to students in transitional years -like the sixth-graders entering the middle school and ninth-graders beginning high school, Superintendent of Schools Mary Conway has said.

"The extra day really allows those students to get to know other students and get to know the teachers,'' Conway has said.

The extra day can also serve as a practice run for the teachers and their teams, Conway has reasoned.
