Gogoj Among Scholarship Winners

MMH Auxiliary hands out awards to those studying medicine.

Another academic award had been bestowed upon Augustyna Gogoj.

The Manchester Memorial Hospital Auxiliary recently awarded $3,000 scholarships to five local students who are furthering their education in the medical field.

The scholarships are funded from revenues generated by the Auxiliary Gift Shops at Manchester Memorial Hospital and The Penny Saver Thrift Shop in Manchester.

Committee members Johanna Heidtman, Donna Cammeyer, Elaine Charizione, Marilyn Perrachio, Denise Prindiville and Mary Patricia Sullivan chose the recipients based on their scholastic achievements, community volunteer work, personal achievements and recommendations from teachers and mentors.

And Gogoj, the Class of 2011 valedictorian at Rockville High School, was one of the recipients. She will attend the University of Connecticut and plans to be a doctor.

The other 2011 recipients are:

• Cynthia Tetteh, a graduate of Manchester High School, will attend the University of Connecticut and plans to become an obstetrician/gynecologist.

• Matthew St. Martin, a graduate of Windham High School, will attend Sacred Heart University to study nursing. He lives in Willimantic.

• Emily Briggs, a graduate of Manchester's East Catholic High School. She will attend the University of Minnesota and major in medical research. She lives in Columbia.

• Shilla Thomas, a graduate of South Windsor High School, will attend the University of Connecticut to become a pediatric nurse, and in the future she plans to work toward becoming a pediatrician.
