CRS Students Put a Little More Than Their 2 Cents in for Fund-Raiser

The "Penny Wars" project was a success.

Michael DeBellis, the assistant principal at Center Road School, was handing out $100 bills to Student Council members last week.

"OK, everyone look ahead and smile," he said.

The students joked about keeping the bills, but in the end they gladly handed them back because they knew all 15 of them were going to good causes.

The $1,500 was the result of a competition created by DeBellis and the council called "Penny Wars." Students collected pennies from March 25 to April 8.
Three charities were chosen. The students are donating $500 each to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital, the Hockanum Valley Community Council and Heifer International.

The Heifer Project segment will turn into an active one, Debellis said,  because the charity donated livestock to needy families worldwide and donors can trace the progress from the birth of the animals until they are turned over to the family.
