BCR in State Hockey Finals After Double-OT Win

The game-winner comes off a mad scramble to get the the Division III title game.

Kevin Morton knocked home a rebound just more than three minutes into the second overtime period as the Bolton/Coventry/Rockville hockey team defeated NFA/St. Bernard/Bacon Academy 2-1 on Tuesday to advance to the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Division III finals.

BCR will take on Newngton-Berlin-Manchester in Saturday's championship game, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Yale's Ingalls Rink.

NBM was a 4-1 winner over Masuk on Tuesday.

At the 5:54 mark of the first period, Nate Tonzi scored from J.R.  Piretti to make it 1-0. BCR coach Christian Stevenson called it the product of a "hard-working shift," after Piretti carried the puck into the offensive zone and began a sequence that ended when Tonzi was able to fund the net.

Tonzi was recently moved to forward from defense.

"And it looked like the kid was playing forward all year,"Stevenson said.

NFA/St. Bernard/Bacon tied it up four minutes into the third when Eric Brown took a pass from Ben Thompson and scored on what Stevenson said was "an impossible angle" that he thought goalie Cameron Earle had covered.

"It was a breakout play and the kid went wide between the face-off dot and the goal line," Stevenson said. "Cam had it covered. The hole was the size of puck and I did not even realize it went in. I looked up and the light was on."

Earle's counterpart, Jonah Beauton had a wild glove save to keep his team in the game.

In the second overtime Morton was able to emerge from a scramble in front of Beauton to gather the puck and shoot, then score on his own rebound for the game-winner.

"In overtime, we kept saying just put the puck in play put it on goal," Stevenson said. "We played our game in OT and it showed."
