Video: At VCMS on Monday, it was 100,000 + 3 = Pie

The reading challenge numbers added up to a pie in the face for two teachers and an administrator.

Jen Slater's reward for being named Teacher of the Year in Vernon?

A pie in the face.

Assistant Principal Jim Harrison had no choice. Someone in authority had to face the firing squad.

One minute Christine Roy was teaching, the next she was being led to a chair next to Slater and Harrison. She "volunteered."

It was all part of the friendly wager that is the reading challenge over the last month of the school year at Vernon Center Middle School. How much did the students read? After they passed 100,000 pages, Reading Consultant Maureen Kearney kind of figured someone would be pied.

But three lined up on Monday at VCMS. Some of the top readers sixth-grader Kelly Guerrero, seventh-graderChelsea Chatterton and eighth-grader Odyssey Sirois were chosen to do the honors - banana cream for Harrison and lemon meringue for the Slater and Roy.
