Successful, Healthy Ideas for Springtime Meals and Snacks

A fun, healthy snack idea your kids will love, just in time for Spring!

Tomorrow is the first day of Spring! And, although there is still inches of that terrible white stuff on our front lawns, and the heat is still cranked...there are blooms blossoming underneath the snow, soon to be colorful flowers. Lets get that Springtime spirit in full gear with a great recipe that inspires sunshine and better moods!

I want to reach out to parents who are sending their kids off to school tomorrow, looking for a unique way to celebrate the change in season. Your kids will be so excited to see this cute snack idea, and you will be excited that its healthy and fun!

Try putting your child's snack foods in a small plastic baggie, separated by a clothes pin. Let your child(ren) color the clothes pin and add the eyes and pipe cleaners. Suddenly a butterfly appears out of what was a bag of carrots and grapes!

As Vernon schools don't allow peanuts or peanut butter in lunches or snacks because of allergy risks, among other foods, Ive included a list of snack food ideas that are approved snacks for Vernon students to take with them.

What you'll need

  • Clothespins
  • Glitter glue
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Small crackers, dried fruit, trail mix, or your choice of snack items
  • Snack-size ziplock bags
  • Pipe cleaners

How to make it

  1. For each bag, decorate one side of a clothespin (we used glitter glue). Glue two small googly eyes near the gripping end of the clothespin and let the glue dry.

  • Put small crackers, dried fruit, trail mix, or whatever else you'd like into a snack-size ziplock bag until it's about half full. Seal the bag, cinch the middle with your fingers, and clip it with the clothespin.

  • Fold down the tips of a 4-1/2-inch length of pipe cleaner, then bend the entire piece in half. Clip the pipe cleaner in the clothespin.

  • Snack Ideas:

Carrot sticks, grapes, apple slices, gold fish of any variety, cheese slices, dried fruit, crackers, pretzels, blueberries, granola bars cut up into small pieces, celery sticks, broccoli, cherry tomato's, raisins, graham crackers, pepperoni, kiwi, pop corn, Cheerios, Kix, orange slices
