Senior Diary: Missing Recess

My greatest fear during fifth grade graduation was not whether or not I’d get lost in the middle school, or be late to class because I couldn’t open my locker. I wasn’t the least bit concerned with whether my teachers would be nice, or if the cafeteria served better food. (I always brought my own lunch). I never cried over waking up early to take the bus to school, or how much longer homework would take me. But as a graduate of the fifth grade, I mourned the loss of recess.

Whether it be board games on a snowy day, or tag on the playground in the beginning of spring, recess always top my favorite “subject” – gym. Skinner Road School’s playground always offered me a variety of choices my friends and I could choose from to fill the half hour void. Swing sets, and pretend horses usually beat out the slide and some football with the boys and tag became a favorite by the fourth grade.

Entering my last school year here at Rockville High School, I find myself still feeling the loss. As I move away from school, and plan my life-long career, I want my day to day adult life to be filled with the same joy recess brought me. May my future be filled with days as crazy as playground tag, as fluent and consistent as the swings, and may I wear the same smile I wore running as a “wild stallion” in the fields behind Skinner Road School. The future is my recess.
