RHS Book Club: Every Book Lover's Dream

What reader doesn’t enjoy sitting down with a bunch of fellow book-nerds to discuss their favorite novels? It is the chance to explore themes and motivations, and it is a safe haven for the fanatics who wish to express their enjoyment of literature. There is nothing better than to end a stressful day of school with relaxing conversation about books.

Or not so relaxing... As any book club goer can attest to, people can become quite passionate about their favorite novels. Discussions are thought-provoking and open to everyone; in fact, one reader may have inferred a different theme than the person sitting next to them. However, everybody’s opinions are listened to and considered.

The RHS Book Club also offers great opportunities for those who want to pursue a career in writing. Through this club, members have been able to meet some of their favorite authors. Earlier in the year, the group travelled to Hartford to see Neal Shusterman, the author of Unwind and Unwholly, talk about his experience as a writer. It allowed students to question what it meant to be an author and how to improve upon their own writing.

Book Club also introduces teenagers to more contemporary literature. The genres range from fantasy to non-fiction graphic novels and everything in between. Last week the students discussed Everyday by David Levithan, a novel that explores the possibility of waking up as a different person every day of your life. On April 23rd the club will review the award winning novel Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys. This historical-novel deals with fifteen-year-old Lina, a Lithuanian girl living during the reign of Stalin.

The RHS Book Club is the perfect escape for those seeking refuge from the monotony of reality into a world of adventure, comedy, and an entire life story in 300 pages.
