One Student's Perspective on Rockville High School

Just a few reasons to have pride in RHS.

It is too often that I hear my peers complain about how bad our school is. Let me just put it out there - there is almost no school spirit.

I find that people have as much hope for our school as they do for water to turn to wine. But let me tell you this truth - our school has so much to offer. Some of the programs we have are truly special. Yeah, the athletics are not the best in the state. Yet, we did win the homecoming football game! And last year, the softball team won the State Championship.

And ... there are the arts programs.

All of them.

I know so many gifted painters and photographers and musicians and poets and story writers. I happen to be a very natural musician and a rather natural writer, and I can say that the programs in this school have really allowed me to capitalize on the things that come easy to me.

The RHS Marching Band is a force. At our first competition, we crushed the rest of the field and had a great first show, scoring a 74.25, which is pretty high for the first show. The Band is also beneficial to the school. It provides entertaining music throughout home football games, and it provides a half time show.

Not only that, but the band’s home show, the “Festival of the Bands,” brings in quite a bit of money to the program. This year, the band’s show is going to have more than 10 bands, including the marching band from UMass, which is widely known as perhaps the best college marching band. But it’s not just the marching band that brings pride to Rockville.

The Creative Writing program, a rarity in itself, wins so many awards for its young writers. Many students get a shot at even getting published. Not many other schools give their students this opportunity, which makes this a really good reason why our school does have a lot to offer.

And honestly, I really do feel like I learn a lot in the classes I take. All of my classes encourage me to think on a higher level and help me solve problems in the real world. Many cause me to look at certain things with a different perspective.  For example, I now know how important the Civil War is. It wasn’t just a war, as I had thought before, it was perhaps the biggest turning point in American history.

These are the reasons why I say that there is hope for Rockville.
