Graduation: A New Beginning

An RHS senior reflects on graduation and gives advice to the Class of 2012.

On Wednesday, June 20, 2012, the door to what we once knew – the lives we once led – will be closing, only to open a new set of doors to our new lives.

When they said the ending of our chapter would be bittersweet, they failed to mention that this would be the most difficult thing we’ve ever had to do in our lives – move on. I couldn’t stress how bittersweet the feeling really is. Words fail to describe how much I feel for the day I’ve been both looking forward to and dreading since I walked into the Rockville High School doors as a freshman. The class of 2012 has left its mark on RHS, and I hope that mark will be forever lasting.

We’ve watched the building change physically. But we’ve also watched it change emotionally. From new teachers, to a change in our principal, the aura given off in the halls of RHS are no longer ones that intimidate me. I have grown in these halls, and though my locker still stands a good 3 feet above me, I feel as though I stand 3 feet above it.

This place has changed me, it has changed us, rather, and for that, I couldn’t be more thankful. Bonds have been created, and ties have been made. The class of 2012 started off as a class of cliques where it was forbidden to linger in between two groups. Now as our final days are approaching, it's clear that our cliques have dissipated and we’ve become a whole class.

As I am writing this, tears are beginning to form, and I couldn’t even tell you if it’s because I’m sad that my chapter at RHS is ending or if I’m excited for what’s to come. All I know is that I will forever be in debt to the people in the closed doors of Rockville.

I have been blessed to have shared the last four years of my life with the people I’ve been blessed to know. They have forever left a mark in my life, and I hope that I have done the same for them.

My advice to the class of 2012 is to do big things and to always remember your roots – remember where you came from. This is not the end – this is our new beginning.

Embrace it.
