Visions for Vacancies: Are There any Cheers for Sears?

What should go in the old Sears Hardware space?

As the Stop & Shop at the other end of the plaza expands, we wonder about the old Sears Hardware vacancy.

Yes, Vernon Patch loves your input. So, in a column called Visions for Vacancies, we present a vacant building - this week the former Sears Hardware near KMart and Stop & Shop on Pitkin Road - and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use for it.

We do have zoning regulations, but put all of that aside for now and concentrate on what you would like to see there or what would be the best use for the community.

What should go there?

I would love to see Sears/Kmart expand in this area. Move some of the stores and restaurants around to make a welcoming shopping experience.

There are many chain restaurants that do not have local representation. Many of these family oriented restaurants are advertised nightly on television. Just ask your children what they are.

I believe a big name retail store needs to move into this location. The issue is that there are so many close by in the Manchester area. This makes it tough because most big name stores would want to be in the center of attention in the Mall and surrounding area. I think that we need to look at the bigger picture here, not only do we need the fill the space where Sears was, we need to fill all the spaces in the entire plaza. A comprehensive plan needs to be established and a rogue salesman needs to stand behind that plan until it is fully executed. Something popular but unigue needs to draw attention to that plaza and I am not sure what it is. I believe Vernon needs a Panera Bread, Souplantation, Einstein Brothers, Trader Joe's, and some good solid retail stores, but along with that, they need to be located appropriately and emulate a touch of "class" which Vernon tends to miss the buck on with their shopping plaza's. This plaza needs to be re-vamped into a place that will attract energetic successful business. Lastly, KMart needs to be renovated 100%, its a dump.....period.
