Vernon Council Sets Agenda for Tuesday's Special Meeting

The rescheduled ordinance dealing with intoxication in parks is on tap.

The Town Council on Tuesday is scheduled to head into executive session twice and then take comment on a proposed ordinance amendment making it illegal to be drunk in a public park.

The special meeting is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

The public hearing on the ordinance was supposed to be conducted on Tuesday of this week, but an advertising snafu forced town officials to remove it from the council agenda.

Currently, according to town Ordinance No. 111, alcoholic beverages are prohibited in public parks, but public intoxication is not.

Vernon police say the amendment would give them another tool to deal with those who are drunk or high on drugs in the town's parks.

The first scheduled executive session is to review negotiations regarding collective bargaining agreements.

The second is to discuss pending litigation between the town and Steven Chipman, a former police officer.

The agenda does not indicate the council will be taking any action on the two executive session items.

A citizens forum is on the agenda, per rule.
