Potential Reconfiguration on School Board Agenda Tonight

The public comment session is slated for 6 and the meeting itself is scheduled for 7 at Vernon Center Middle School.

The Board of Education is scheduled to meet tonight with a major issue on the agenda - the potential reconfiguration of the town's five elementary schools.

The school board meting is slated for 7 p.m. in the Vernon Center Middle School auditorium. It was moved from the school administration building.

It is technically a special meeting because of the move, so a public comment session from 6 to 7 p.m. had to be scheduled separately.

The comment session directive is an, "Opportunity for public to share feedback with the Board of Education regarding their thoughts on school reconfiguration or other potential future agenda items or general information provided to the board."

The discussion and possible action regarding potential reconfiguration is the fourth agenda category - general business.

It is the first item under general business.

Attached are tables regarding the options being studied, cost estimates for reconfiguration and results from a public survey on reconfiguration.

The public, both in the survey and at focus groups in each elementary school, seems to be overwhelmingly opposed to reconfiguration. Most of the comments revolved around preserving the neighborhood school concept.
