Police, Feds Offering Drug Depository

Collection point for unwanted drugs scheduled to be set up later this month.

The Vernon Police Department and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration will be setting up a collection station at which the public can dispose of unwanted drugs later this month.

The program is scheduled April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the public works garage, 375 Hartford Turnpike, state Route 30.

''This is another opportunity for people to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous - no questions asked,'' Vernon police said in a news release.

The DEA and local law enforcement outlets collected 242,000 pounds - about 121 tons - of prescription drugs at more than 4,000 sites last September.

Police said the majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

Police said Americans can no longer dispose of unwanted drugs by flushing them down the toilet or by throwing them in the trash because the methods are considered safety and health hazards.
