No Trash, Recycling to be Collected on Columbus Day

The recycling and trash will be collected on Tuesday.

The Vernon Public Works Department will be closed on Monday, Oct. 8, in observance of  Columbus Day.

Trash and recycling will not be collected on that day. It will instead be collected on Tuesday, Oct. 9, along with that day's regular collection.

Excess refuse and recycling may be brought to the Transfer Station free of charge year round on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

The Transfer Station will be closed on Sunday, October 7, 2012.

What is meant by "free of charge"? What is it that they do charge for? That is to say they punch a ticket that is paid for in advance, do they not?

"Free of charge" means you do not have to have a permit and punchcard to drop off excess refuse and recycling throughout the year, only proof of residency such as a driver's license or a tax bill. Other "free of charge" items that may be disposed of at the Transfer Station include waste motor oil, antifreeze, electronics (including TVs), and mostly-metal items (not including freon units).
