Leaf Season Set to Begin in Vernon

The DPW chief on Monday reviewed the basic rules.

In two weeks, it will officially be leaf season.

Public Works Director Robert Kleinhans said on Monday that leaf bins will be open by Friday, Oct. 12, at three locations:

• The Nye Street firehouse, located off West Street.

• The Church Street parking lot.

• Legion Field, located off Regan Road at the rear of the parking lot.

Residents are required to deposit leaves in the areas provided, Kleinhans said.

He was adamant that bins are for leaves only. No grass clippings or brush will be allowed, he said. "Contamination" caused by the disposal of any other type of yard waste will result in a leaf bin being shut down," he said.

Plastic bags can be left in the trash barrel, but lawn-sized paper bags are recyclable and do not need to be emptied, he said.

Bagged leaves cannot be put out for collection with regular trash.  A pickup for bagged leaves may be scheduled for the first two Fridays in December by calling the Public Works Office at 860-870-3500 to schedule.

Both biodegradable paper bags and plastic lawn & leaf bags will be collected.
