Four Polling Places to be Used in Vernon on Election Day

Voting begins on Tuesday at 6 a.m.

Here are a few local tidbits leading up to Tuesday's election day.

• The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

• Last year, the October winter storm wreaked havoc in town and the municipal elections were carried out with two polling places.

• Despite Hurricane Sandy, the town will be able to go with a full contingent of voting locations on Tuesday. That is, however, fewer than the last presidential election. Four are being used since the Town Council voted to condense them this year.

• The attached map outlines the new districts and polling places - Northeast School for District 1, Rockville High School for District 2, Skinner Road School for District 3 and Vernon Center Middle School for District 4. VCMS actually sits in the second district, but it was determined by the registrars of voters and the council that Lake Street School is just not big enough for the southern part of town.

• A sign has been placed at Lake Street School to remind voters not to go there.

• The registrars of voters is asking that those voting at Northeast School use the Route 30 driveway to enter and exit.

• About 16,000 have registered in town to vote in the election. That is about typical for a presidential election, but the enthusiasm has stepped up a notch. Two Sundays ago, with the lights on at the Registrars of Voters office for training, someone walked in expecting to register. The registrars broke from training to register the resident.

• Sample ballots are attached.
