DMV Scrambling to Cut Wait Times

DMV is trying to work out the kinks in its new system.

There were some unhappy campers at DMV offices today as the agency works out the kinks of its new streamlining efforts.

Longer-than-expected wait times at Department of Motor Vehicle offices should subside shortly as the agency smoothes out its changeover to regionalizing services "in an effort to save taxpayers money, cut operating costs and improve efficiency," DMV Officials said today.

The DMV on Friday started regional hubs in Wethersfield, Waterbury, Bridgeport and Willimantic to centralize new license testing and other kinds of services once done at 10 full-service branch offices throughout the state.

“We know that Tuesday produced longer than expected wait times, particularly in our Wethersfield and Bridgeport offices," DMV Commissioner melody Currey said. "We’re committed to working with our frontline DMV workers to get through this transition period as quickly as possible. As we attempt to do more with less to meet our budget, there will inevitably be bumps in the road that we will address.

She continued, "We’re aware of the inconvenience today’s wait time caused people, and we want them to know we’re working to remedy the situation.”

The DMV said personnel at the hub offices included staff from other offices to handle today’s customers. The DMV also called in additional existing personnel to process more customers and help to reduce waiting times.

“We are confident we will soon be able to provide taxpayers with better services at a lower cost,” the commissioner said.
