Dems Endorse Schaefer for the Top of Their Ticket

Schaefer to run for mayor while Winkler, Herbst will seek re-election to the Town Council.

There were no sweltering objections to match the heat and humidity outside Wednesday night as the Democratic Town Committee announced its slate of candidates for the upcoming November election.

The caucus, originally scheduled to be on the second floor of town hall, was moved to the Senior Center because it had air conditioning.

Pauline Schaefer, a staple in the Vernon community, has accepted the Democratic nomination for mayor.  Schaefer currently is a member of the Town Council.

The nominating committee presented eight names, which were unanimously accepted by the Town Committee for Town Council. The candidates are Edie Chernack, Thomas DiDio, Virginia Gingras, Marie Herbst (incumbent), Terilynn Rogers, Thomasina Russell, Ronald Scussel, and Michael Winkler (incumbent).

There are two candidates for four-year Board of Education terms – Amarjit Buttar and incumbent Paul Stansel. Two candidates for two year terms were presented – Michele Arn and incumbent Terri Goldich.

Audrey Courtney read a letter of endorsement for Schaefer for mayor, from her husband, U.S. Rep. Joseph Courtney.  The letter talked about the family connections the two have as well as the community service Courtney has witnessed on the part of Schaefer in Vernon.

“She is ready to lead our town based on her intimate knowledge of the strengths and needs,” Audrey Courtney read. “She is a pragmatic leader and will work with all in the town.”

State Rep. Claire Janowski also endorsed Schaefer. Janowski pointed to Schaefer’s experience and service as qualities that make her a good candidate for mayor.

“She loves to work with others to get things done. Something I feel is not being done currently in the Town of Vernon,” Janowski said. “It is a combination of all the qualities, experience, and commitment to tradition…that I believe will make her an effective mayor.”

Schaefer thanked everyone who came to the caucus for their support. She talked about her volunteer work throughout the town and serving on the PTO, board of education and Town Council.

“I will work for all the residents of Vernon,” Schaefer said. “I will work to give our residents back this town. Make them proud to live in Vernon.”
