West Main Street Fire Puts Five People Out Of Their Homes

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.

A fire at a West Main Street apartment Friday afternoon has severely damaged the dwelling and left five people on the sidewalk.

The fire broke out at 3:43 p.m. at the white, two-story structure that occupies 218-220 West Main St. Several fire trucks were dispatched to the scene quickly and the fire was under control in about 20 minutes, an EMS official at the scene said.

No one was injured, and the two cats that lived at the house were saved, the official said.

But the blaze left five adults out of their home. Red Cross workers were at the scene through the evening to help the residents find places to stay and set them up with provisions.

The South Windsor fire marshal's office was covering for Vernon's fire marshal today and a staff member was at the scene until about 7 p.m.

The house was determined to be unfit for anyone to live in it. The cause is still under investigation, the EMS official said.
