Vernon Motorcycle Rider Involved in Weekend Crash Remains Hospitalized

Joseph Chipman, 40, of Rockville, sustained a broken leg in the accident that shut down Route 74 for two hours.

The operator of the motorcycle involved in a one-vehicle accident on Route 74 in South Windsor on Friday remains hospitalized with a broken leg, according to police.

Joseph Chipman, 40, of Rockville, lost control of his motorcycle when he slid on some sand on the edge of the roadway, Chief of Police Matthew Reed said in an email to Patch.

“The bike left the roadway, struck some highway markers, a rock and a utility pole,” Reed said.

Chipman was flown by Life Star to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, where he was treated for his leg injury.

The accident, which took place around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, shut down Ellington Road near the Ellington town line for nearly two hours while police investigated.

Chipman will receive a warning for failing to drive in the proper lane, Reed said.
