Vernon Hosting Search and Rescue Training Exercise on Saturday

The case will be a fictitious small plane crash.

Vernon is hosting an intensive search and rescue training exercise on Saturday that will involve several law enforcement and emergency management  agencies.

The exercise is scheduled to take place off Lake Street from about 7:30  a.m. until noon, Emergency Management Director Michael Purcaro said.

The staging area will be at Lake Street School and the operation will take place in the area of a nearby reservoir, he said.

This event will provide critical inter-town collaboration under controlled conditions," Purcaro said. "It will better prepare all participants for real-world mutually aided emergency response operations."

The scenario is that a small privately owned and operated airplane crashes somewhere in the woods off Lake Street.

Agencies taking part in the operation include police, canine search and rescue units, CERT teams and emergency management officials. A nationwide forensic archaeology recovery team specializing in finding cold case missing persons has been invited, Purcaro said.

The Vernon mayor's office and the Vernon Fire Department are supporting the operations.
